I kinda get the feeling that everyone is forgetting that even Modern Warfare 1’s story was a piece of crap. Yes, we remember the more spectacular moments, but does anyone really understand every the chain of events in the original? Of course, I’m not defending MW2’s story. It was not very good, but neither was MW1’s.
Also, is anyone else tired of silent protagonists in these games (other than the Half-Life series). I find myself more interested in the secondary characters, because there is nothing to relate to with the empty shells that the player must use. I’m not a huge Halo fan, but that is one area that they got right. They created a strong protagonist. I couldn’t give two sh#@s about “Roach” or Ramirez, but in MW2, when “Soap” became an NPC, I immediately became much more invested in his story. And don’t get me started on silent protagonists in RPGs.
Sorry if that didn’t make much sense, it’s late and I am really tired
Your comment totally makes sense. I know that lots of gamers (and me especially!) are guilty of double standards… criticizing some games for being “unrealistic” but then happily playing Super Mario Kart. Or, talking about how awesome the story is in Assassin’s Creed II, but spending 15 minutes crapping on MW2.
But, to this specific point: MW1’s story was over the top, and didn’t always make sense. However, it never made me laugh out loud at how over the top it was, and managed to create multiple moments that were able to immerse me into the perspective of a soldier. Part of this isn’t linked to the “story” (e.g. the parts that would get printed out of someone wrote a script) but rather to the other elements that came together to make it a great experience. For example, “snowmobile jumps a 150 foot gorge” is part of the narrative experience of MW2, and it is stupid.
